The Public Chamber of the Russian Federation is preparing an appeal to the UN and the Council of Europe with the proposal to postpone the presidential elections in Ukraine, scheduled for May 25.

This is what Putin has wanted all along. He wants to de-legitimise any opposition movement in Ukraine. Since the movement of students began gathering last November and the tent occupation began in Maidan, Putin fears that Ukraine will slip from under his economic sphere.  If the elections on the 25th are postponed, Putin and his supporters will have the time to further chisel away at Ukraine.

Maidan protestors gathered to oust corrupt leadership in Ukraine. Especially the Donetsk oblast,Yanukovych and his cronies, they thrived on decades of corruption. This was made clear in the documents that were recovered from the river next to Yanukovych’s residence after he fled to Eastern Ukraine, and then to Russia.

People in Maidan were protesting against corruption. But corruption explains as well why Odessian police can be paid off to support separatists. It also explains why disenchanted youth join the pro-Russian separatists in Luhansk. This is why an alternative may be appealing. However, yet even with the new alternative there is mistrust of any leadership, and any centralised government. Not because of the new interim government, but because.

Maidan was a resistance, a revolt against politicians, governors, businesspersons that have all been in one way or another participants in a corrupt, decaying system . And yet how quickly is recent history forgotten?

Meanwhile: The Russian Federation is significantly strengthening its military positions on the Crimean peninsula by transferring aircraft and military units. In the same manner, Russia is increasing its presence in the unrecognized Transnistria Republic. Thus, Russia is creating a “ring of tension” around Ukraine.

Nevertheless, according to the "People's referendum", held in May 4, 72.8% of residents of Donetsk region and 70.1% of residents of Luhansk region support the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

In the Donetsk region this morning, about 20 armed men attacked the car of the State Border Service of Ukraine, who escorted the detainee.

Finally, Separatists who have declared a ‘People's Republic of Donetsk’ are planning a referendum on secession next Sunday.
